SMS Subscription services range from stock market alerts and horoscope readings through to ringtone delivery and adult downloads.
Subscribers send a keyword to a short code mobile number to subscribe to an advertised service. They are subsequently sent billed messages which may include content or download links on a daily or weekly basis until the subscriber opts out, usually by sending a message such as 'STOP'.

With flexibility on pricing and delivery frequency, the provider can target their audience in the most effective manner, making adjustments as the subscription model is tested via the public domain.

Viewers of late night television will be familiar with adult services where subscriptions to adult images, videos and text chat are on offer. Largely aimed at the male population, and with comparatively high subscription rates, these services are often very lucrative, but require considerable investment in advertising to succeed.
